BJCTA modernizes their passenger communication
The Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA), operator of the Metro Area Express (MAX) and a key provider of public transportation in Alabama, serves nearly 3 million riders each year. With the opening of its intermodal terminal in Birmingham, BJCTA set out to deliver a modern, efficient passenger experience. To achieve this, it placed OnSign at the heart of its digital transformation.
In partnership with Message Point Media and Philips Professional Display Solutions, BJCTA deployed TransitPoint™, a real-time passenger information system fully powered by the OnSign digital signage platform. Running on Philips Android-powered smart displays, OnSign ensures passengers receive accurate, instant updates across bus, rail, and shared mobility services — from MAX and Greyhound to Amtrak, Megabus, and Zyp Bikeshare.
Why OnSign?
OnSign was selected for its unmatched reliability, advanced content management, and scalable flexibility. The platform empowers BJCTA to manage and update over 47 displays across the terminal in real time, all from a single, web-based dashboard. With OnSign, the BJCTA can seamlessly deliver:
Dynamic bay assignments: leveraging OnSign, buses use the first available bay, boosting terminal efficiency by over 40%, with changes instantly displayed to passengers;
Automated audio & visual alerts: when drivers enter a route number, OnSign triggers visual signage updates and natural-voice audio announcements, improving accessibility and ADA compliance;
Multi-service integration: OnSign consolidates data from multiple transport providers, ensuring passengers see clear, synchronized information in one unified system.

Key benefits of OnSign at BJCTA
Centralized real-time control: manage all displays remotely with instant updates across the network;
Future-ready scalability: easily supports new features like Bluetooth Beacon integrations without replacing hardware;
Accessibility leadership: OnSign’s automated alerts and custom apps ensure inclusivity for all riders;
Continuous uptime: built-in reliability minimizes failures and keeps information flowing 24/7;
Optimized investment: BJCTA reduces operational costs while gaining ongoing access to the latest features and enhancements.

By making OnSign the core of its passenger communication strategy, BJCTA has created a smart, future-proof transportation hub that delivers airport-level information quality in a bus terminal environment. This project sets a new industry standard for how public transit authorities can use digital signage to enhance efficiency, accessibility, and passenger satisfaction.
